BNSF Dash 9 and UP AC leads their trains in the same compass direction at Mormon Rocks. The BNSF train will head towards Bartsow, and possibly on to the Transcon, while the UP train is going up towards Tehachapi and the Fresno Sub, possibly on to Roseville. #5439 arrived on the UP on April 2005. UP calls CTE equipt AC4400CWs C44AC-CTEs, so to differentiate the ES44ACs (like 5439), they are called C45AC-CTE. In my experience, these are among the only units where railfans use the railroad designation, and not the manufacturer model. One UP rail has dubbed these GEVOs "Super Twinkies." |

After a few decades as a main line to the Harbors of Long Beach and Los Angeles, the BNSF Harbor Sub has been reduced to a branch line, and embargoed in the middle. Here on the southern end, where stacks once roamed, we see a local climb Monaco Hill bringin tank cars to the Chevron facility in El Segundo. El Nido Park is in the foreground. Although #2316 shows up as a GP38-2, I show that she is a GP38. |

SP 4449 on Deschutes Steam Special |
Description: |
The proud old Lima glides across the Washougal River Bridge as it nears the end of it's run. This was a Northwest Rail Museum two-day rail excursion between Portland and Bend. The train traveled north from Bend along the Deshutes River crossing the Columbia River and then heading west at Wishram, Washington. Southern Pacific 4449 is the only surviving example of Southern Pacific Railroad's (SP) GS-4 class of steam locomotives. The GS-4 is a streamlined 4-8-4 (Northern) type steam locomotive. GS stands for "Golden State" (a nickname for California, where the locomotive was operated in regular service) or "General Service." |

Description: |
Found this unit sitting by itself at the Route 8 overpass in St. Mary's Yard on a very wet morning. Like many Willamette & Pacfic units, this one is named for a town on the railroad, in this case, Indepedence, OR. This is a former Santa Fe unit. At one time, it wore Kodochrome colors. Power for this locomotive is provided by a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine, which can produce 2,300 horsepower. Railroads that bought it, chose it for its improved fuel econemy over the ormally aspirated GP38-2. |

This old building served much of its life as the Etiwanda station on the Pacific Electric San Bernardino Line. Later, it became a lumber yard office. Today, the neighborhood has been taken over by ultra modern subdivisions full of snout houses and the PE ROW is being turned into a bike and walking path, while restoration awaits (someday) for the station. |

A Radio Control driller pulls up to the abandoned Hobart Tower at San Pedro Junction. Sadly, the Burlington Northern GP50 is wearing a "Welcome to LA" paint scheme. This GP50 was delivered new to BN in July 1985. It was later derated to 2500 hp and reclassified GP25 in late 2006. The tower, built in 1926, was closed permenantly on April 15, 2002. It protected the crossing of the Union Pacific San Pedro Sub and the ATSF First District. |

The trailing NCPU on Amtrak's LA to SLO Surfliner. This is the only Pacific Surfliner that normally operates with Horizon Fleet cars, a P42Dc and a Cabbage Car. It is also the only Surfliner that doesn't reach San Diego, running r/t LA to SLO. As to the trestle, it is 811 feet long and opened on December 12, 1900. It is located in a state park, where the rangers refer to it as the "Ghost Bridge." |

Two Los Angeles Railway Huntington Type B Standard Cars are part of this abandoned cafe. They are reported to be circa 1914 & 1916. The restauarant has been out of business for some time (possibly more than 30 years according to one source). The frontage road on which they sit was the orginal Hwy 101, and the restaurant dates back to at least the 1950s, when locals called it the "Box Cars." The oringal owner was named Mullins, and it was called Mullins Dining Cars at the time. |

The Santa Maria Valley RR is railfan friendly and a terrific trip back in time. SMV #70 is a GE 70-ton switcher built in January 1950 (Builder No. 30381) acquired for operation in November 1972 from Fort Dodge DM&S. At the time of this writing, her sister, SMV 80, is out of service in the engine house in Santa Maria, making this the only operating 70t on a railroad that once rostered almost half a dozen of the creatures. |

A unique unit, BNSF 2931 was one of the original patch jobs that was not repeated, seen here coming out of the woods to cross Torrance Ave. This trains entire trip from Watson to Alcoa Yard is all now in yard limits due to the downgrading of the Harbor Sub. #2931 began life as a Union Pacific GP35 in June of 1964 (UP #746). Retired in August of 1983, she went to NRE and then to EMD as a hulk. EMD rebuilt the unit to GP39-2 standards. The model GP39E indicates an EMD rebuild as oppsed to the GP39M rebuilds done at the same time by Morrison-Knudson. |

While the Long Wharf at the "Port of Los Angeles" actually jutted out into the Pacific Ocean slightly north of here, this is the historic marker for the one time dream to build a thriving ship to railroad port near Santa Monica CA. The Los Angeles and Independence was the original railroad here, later Southern Pacific, and then Pacific Electric. While the eastern portion of this line is being turned into a mass transit line, there is no talk of ever bringing the tracks all the way out here to the one time western end of the line. |

The Formosa Cafe, a major Hollywood Star hangout, has a PE car as its bar. It is one of the 800 Class units, although its actual road number seems to be lost to the ages. The 800s were Southern California's first high speed interurbans. They were also the largest interurban class with 131 cars of this type in service. They were designed by Huntington engineers in 1902. |

Pacific Electric 800 Car |
Description: |
This PE 800 Series car is now the bar of the Formosa Cafe on Santa Monica and Formosa. These cars were the first true interurban cars on Huntington's Pacific Electric. The restaurant reports the car dates from 1902, which would make it part of the original order for these cars, but the road number on this one is unknown. Across the street from Samuel Goldwyn Studios (later United Artits, Warner Hollywood and then The Lot) it is a famous Hollywood watering hole. The car once ran on tracks in the street behind it. To add insult to injury, the cab has been covered over with wood paneling. |

Fly ash is the finely divided mineral residue resulting from the combustion of coal in electric generating plants. It is inorganic, incombustible matter present in the coal that has been fused during combustion into a glassy amorphous structure. It used to be released into the atmosphere, but is now collected and used to make cement. |

While we have lots of run-through power here in LA, this is the first IC unit I've personally ever seen. IC 6066 began life as a SD40 on Gulf, Mobile & Ohio (#917) in 1966. The moniker SD40-2R comes from the VMV Paducah Shops, which rewired it to Dash-2 electrical standards in 1995. The unit's dynamic brakes (and its blister) were removed at that time too. |

A Saturday Orange County Line train from Oceanside is pushed under the the old Santa Fe signal bridge at Pioneer Boulevard. I don't know how long the signal bridge will last, but it's a nice memory of old time rairoading while it's still here. F59PHI #887 was the very last example of this model that Metrolink bought. It arrived in November of 2001 and was actually asembled by Alstom. Metrolink's new MP36s should start arriving soon, taking away #887's new kid on the block status. |

The Los Angeles Junction was incorporated in 1923 to operate a private line in the Central Manufacturers District. Controlled by Santa Fe and now BNSF, the terminal and switching line has a spaghetti bowl of track in Vernon. Its fleet of four CF7s were rebuilt by Santa Fe from F7(A)s, this one in May of 1972. It began life as F3(A) 201C in November 1948, and was rebuilt into an F7(A) before becoming a CF7. |

Getting ready for work at J-Yard, a hogger carries his supplies up to his hog, in this case, a former Missouri Pacific GP83-2 coupled to a "Crud" (a former SP SW1500) at J-Yard near downtown Los Angeles. GP38-2 #622 was originally delivered to the MoPac as their #2122 Jan 1975. #Y1199 is older, having been originally delivered to the eSPee as their #2657 May 1972. Nice to see the old units still running. This train will be YJY78R, the Los Angeles Times Job. It will shove to East Redondo, and then move ove to the LA Times lead, which is some might poor looking track. |

This location is a block west of the Nevin Station, fairly close the eastern end of the line (at least since it was part of the Pacific Electric). Baby Wings adorn the nose of a one-time Missouri Pacific GP38-2 making it look like a fanciful Tyco HO model to my eye. The "Baby Wings" scheme (so named by raiflans) was only applied to 50 units (all by Jenks in 2001/2002). It was a nice scheme.... sorry to see it go away. As an aside, the snow on the San Gabriel Mountains in the background is deceiving... I think it was almost 60 degrees out when I took this shot. |

Radio Sled under the high tension power line |
Description: |
Union Paicific "radio sled" #Y164 began life as a B23-7 when it was delivered to the Missouri Pacific as their #4669 in June of 1980. It was upgraded into a B30-7 (or B23-7M) by the MoPac, and then became Union Pacific #259 after the merger. The Union Pacific converted it into a CCRCL in June of 2004, stripping out its traction motor and fuel tank. CCRCL stands for Control Car Remote Control Locomotive. We are at the Myers Team Track in downtown LA. The building in the back with the police helicopters parked atop it is Piper Tech. |

Heck, they do serve breakfast 24 hours a day. According to the radio chatter, this train would end up swapping crews two more times before reaching Colton about five hours later. UP stacks sit under the majesty of Mount Baldy. Just moments before I took this shot, the crew called in to request permission to enter BNSF trackage. They announced their position as Limonite (that's Limonite Road to the left), but I think this is actually Pedley over here, and Limonite is another mile or so east (typical railfan, thinking I know better than the rail, huh?). SD70M #4439 was delivered to the UP on August 2001. |

Stacks sit in the Metrolink station waiting for permission to enter the BNSF and head east. The Metrolink station here is basically a platofrm with this funky looking roofs. Moments before I snapped this a private security guard approached me and asked me if I was a professional photographer or taking the pictures for my own enjoyment. Expecting to be kicked out either way I told her the truth, I'm an amateur taking pics for fun. She nodded that that was okay and left me alone. |

An eastbound rail train waits alongside Dewey Avenue, shortly after the dispatcher has announced, "That's enough eastbounds, we've been doing eastbounds all morning. Time for some westbounds." This train answered back that it was tying down, and I discovered that it was under the authority of a lady hogger. These units have quite a varied seniority. #4666 was delivered June 2001, #3731 in February 1980, and #2222 as #6067 in March 1988. |

Westbound stacks pass an eastbound rail train, while paralleling Dewey Avenue in the Riverside "Quiet Zone." No horns allowed. The area behind my back here is all residential, with tidy working class homes. The westbound stacker has just come off the BNSF San Bernardino Sub and is now on home rails on UP's Los Angeles Sub, about to pass "Streeter." It's lead unit is one of UP's older ES44ACs, #5520, which was delivered June 2005. SD40-2 #3731 is a tad older though, having been delivered February 1980. |

Union Pacific statcks cross the Santa Ana River on the BNSF bridge as they move towards Colton Crossing. This multi-span girder bridge is a mishmash of girder styles, I'm assuming due it being upgraded at some point? This train had already crossed the Santa Ana River on the UP's magnificent arch bridge in Riverside. Prior to that, I'd seen it in Rowland Heights. Took it around five hours to go 36 miles. From radio chatter, I understood that it was re-crewed twice. |

Where The Super Chief and El Capitan once rolled, now Los Angeles Metro Rail Gold Line trains glide by. The Garvanza Viaduct sits at the western end of the former Santa Fe's Second District and carries the tracks over the Arroyo Seco and the Pasadena Freeway (fka the Arroyo Seco Parkway). Unfortunately, as you can see, the city has determined that the bridge should be hemmed in by trees, making it extremely difficult to photograph any trains on it anymroe. |

The three P865s are nearing the end of their run from downtown Long Beach to downtown Los Angeles, passing over the former Pacific Eletric Long Beach Line for many of those miles, although here, the train is on new ROW created for the LACMTA Blue Line. If you look closely, you'll see that the last car is painted in the Metro Rail's new stealth grey scheme. |

GE 25-tonner #50 comes from Bethlehem Steel in Los Angeles, CA, while Plymouth Model DDT #40 came from Kaiser Steel in Fontanta, CA. |

I would have loved to see this old gal run, but the Santa Cruz tourist line was shut tight when I was there. In the summer, it runs trains down into Santa Cruz, for some great street running with wigwags and tunnels. CF7 #2600 began life as F7(A) 248L in February of 1951. The Santa Fe rebuilt it into a CF7 in October of 1972. |

The Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific was sadly not running on Easter Day this year (in fact, the ROW has trees on it, I later discovered), but I was able to shoot this neat little Whitcomb in the yard they share with Roaring Camp & Big Trees. This 45-ton side-rodder had belonged to and worked the sand pits in nearby Olympia, CA until the line was abandoned by the Southern Pacific. When Big Tees took over, this little engine was used to re-open the line. |

On Easter Day this year Roaring Camp & Big Trees added extra trains, as everything was sold out. This little mighty might Heisler was called up to pull six car trains full of tourists up to Bear Mountain. She made quite a racket doing it. Built in 1899 for Westside Lumber by Stearns Manufacturing Company, the Tuolumne has been working Roaring Camp since 1963. |

The 'Garita's in the Slough! The Santa Margarita Turn crosses over the Elkhorn Slough in a blanket of fog. Amazingly, it was sunny and clear less than a mile from here, but as I drove into the Slough area, we were socked in with pea soup. Didn't slow the train down though, which had already hit track speed. This bridge's official name is the "Elkhorn Slough Railroad Bridge," of course. The GP15-1 comes from Missouri Pacific and was delivered to the MP in August of 1981. |

My plan had been to watch this train leave Watsonville Jct, and then casually beat it here, but I made a wrong turn and just managed to get to this spot seconds before. The buildings that line Walker Street are mainly agricultural cold storage centers and other assorted warehouses. |
