Nearly fresh from the SLSF West Springfield Shops where this powerful 4-6-4 Hudson was rebuilt from a 1917 Baldwin 4-6-2 Pacific. Note the wide side valence with matching paint scheme on the tender - a note of inexpensive "streamlining". A note on the back of the photo states "Diamond is "red"." The Hudson had a short service life with the introduction of diesels. It met its final fate at the scrapper's torch in February of 1951. Hudson specs - serial #45701, 74" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 26x28" cylinders, engine weight of 360,960 lb, tractive effort of 48,919 lb. Arthur B. Johnson photo |
