Built by EMD 12/1950 as Weyerhaeuser #300, then sold to Larry's Truck & Electric 12/2011. Bought by Pennsylvania and Southern and renumbered 17 in June 2016. The locomotive has 15 stars on each side of the cab to honor 30 US servicemen that perished when a Chinook CH-47D helicopter with the call sign “Extortion 17” was shot down by the Taliban with a rocket propelled grenade on August 6th 2011 in Afghanistan. It was the largest single event loss of American lives in Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition to US military personnel, 7 members of the Afghan National Security Force and a US military working dog were on board. There were no survivors. Each star is named for one of the US human casualties. |
