The late afternoon sun puts a shine on this sad sight of Conrail GG1 #4859 and sister #4887 sitting in the Enola, PA, scrap lilne two years after being retired in February of 1980. Built by PRR's Altoona and GE in December of 1937, it served PRR, PC and CR before its 43 years of service came to an end. Conrail conductor Ken Taylor captured this sad moment in the life of the locomotive. However, #4859 did not perish but was rescued, restroed cosmetically and placed on display at the Transportation Center in Harrisburg, PA. Appropriate place to be displayed since this loco pulled first electric train to Harrisburg from Philadelphia in 1938. |
