I shot the New Haven ALCO PA-1s westbound at Boston Switch in Central Falls, RI, an easy walk from where I grew up. Note that the units don't "match" because the early paint scheme had white below and the final scheme had red below. The NH had 27 PAs but at the time of the photo they were being supplanted by FL9s and road switchers. Boston Switch is where the old Boston & Providence (now Amtrak) joined the Providence & Worcester for a joint trackage arrangement to Providence. The P&W in the foreground predated the B&P which originally used a different route into Providence. It was a treat to hear the engineer notch out the throttle as the end of the train left the sharp curve. The date of the photo is an approximate guess since I failed to mark my slide. |
