Number 511 was built in May 1955 as UP E9 949 (c/n 20486) on EMD Order 2070, sold in September 1972 to PNC, sold by PNC to the C&NW becoming 511 on May 23, 1973 after exchanging the steam generators for Detroit Diesel HEP. It was sold to RTA on December 31, 1977 and leased to the C&NW for operation as Metropolitan Rail (Metra) 511 from 1984 to 1989. Retired March 19, 1989, it was sold to Kasten Railcar Services, Edwardville, Illinois, in late 1989. Kasten Railcar sold Metra 511 to Union Pacific in September 1990. UP returned the unit to its original UP number (UP 949) and operates the unit as part of an A-B-A set of E-units on special trains. |
