"New" Toms River freight station
In the 1970s, Conrail built this freight ramp/platform and siding off NJ Route 37 when the CNJ branch east of Parkway was abandoned after the South Toms River freight station closed in 1973. Unfortunately the "new freight station" never saw much use as by then LTL/LCL and carload freight were going downhill due to trucks and it rots away today, overgrown. In a sense, the relocation of the Toms River freight station in the 1970s parallels the shift in the development of Toms River in which the community moved out from downtown (where the old freight station was) to the new developments along the main routes.
