SP 4-8-8-2 #4220 |
Description: |
One of the truly iconic steam locomotives ever built was this Baldwin cab forward. No other American railroad built this style so it is a unique arrangement soley a Southern Pacific icon. Out of the 256 cab forward units built, only one remains in the California State Museum in Sacramento. No date or location was listed for this photo so they are arbitrarily set. From the service pit to the side, it appears to be in a shops area, possibly Sacramento. No photographer listed either. |

Here is an excellent example of a later Lima built locomotive from 1941. Traditionally called a "Northern" type loco, Southern Pacific preferred to call this type a "Golden State". This GS-4 class locomotive rode on 80" drivers and produced a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure. Elroy Giffin photo. |

Here is another example of a 1942 Lima class GS-4 "Northern" type locomotive, although Southern Pacific preferred to call it a "Golden State" type. It rode on 80" drivers and produced a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure. From the label at the bottom of the photo, it appears this was taken during a fan trip in June of 1955. The lucky photographer to capture this moment was Elroy Giffin, a lucky man! |
