Great view |
Description: |
This was taken from up above Corning on the NY 414 overpass. It gives a good look at the layout in Corning-see the photo of BUME from 1987 in the D&H album for a deeper explanation. The train, TV 300, is on the ex Erie post 1951 alignment, which took the railroad out of the street in downtown Corning, and made a connection with the NYC here. The east leg of that connection is in the foreground. The red lights at CP West Glass, visible to the right of the train in the distance, mark where the west leg of the NYC connection joins the Southern Tier Line. The empty bridge abutments are the abandoned DLW, which passed here before it diverged shortly to the west to head for Bath, Groveland, and Buffalo. |

Going through at Glass |
Description: |
East Glass, that is. TV 301 passes the home signal at CP E Glass, the east leg of the wye leading to the Corning Secondary, the ex NYC line that runs north along Seneca Lake to a connection with the Chicago Line at Lyons. The line will be downgraded in a few years-abandoned south of Wellsville-and this point will be renamed CP Gibson when the switch at N Glass is changed to a hand throw. Fall color abounds on this mid October day. TV 301 will follow the Erie west of Corning to Buffalo. |

Broad expanse |
Description: |
This view of TV 301 shows a wide view of the Chemung River as it approaches Corning. The tracks are the former Erie, the empty space to the left was the Lackawanna right of way. To the right, is the still building NY 17 bypass around Corning. Drivers wishing to go through Corning at this time still have to go downtown, following what is now NY 352-Dennison Pkwy-through the middle of town. The roadway will be open in the next year or so, but the 4 lane will end here until the segment connecting to the rest of the Southern Tier Expressway is completed in 1995, vexing train chasers who still have to go though town and deal with a couple of lights to try and stay with the train. If you had some luck and the slowpokes stayed out of your way, you had a chance. Im standing on the NY 414 overpass. |

Run through power |
Description: |
NS power would sometimes turn up on OIBU, probably after Conrail borrowed it at Enola. It would run to Buffalo, getting turned back to NS there. A pair of NS units trail this OIBU passing the model railroad buildings at Waverly. In a few months, Guilford would put the D&H in bankruptcy and cut it loose. NS would assist in the directed service, and NS power would be a daily event on the Tier. |

Stacks in the fog |
Description: |
An early October morning finds TV 301 heading west at Hiawatha Rd in Owego, passing signal 233-1, which would be removed when the new radio alarm detector was installed at Tioga Center a few years later. If you look closely, you can see the extra light below the main head. This light diplays "hot box" if the detector at Campville, MP 230, gets a hit on a hot axle, and would set the signal red. I only saw it happen once. |

Coal east and a special signal |
Description: |
A UNG coal train bound for NYSEG at Johnson City rolls east at Campville. The signal at right is notable for its hot box warning light, which is seen below the signal head. There was a hot box detector a mile to the east at MP 230.48 on track 1. If there was a hit, it would change the signal here to yellow, and the light underneath would light up with "hot box". It would also change the next signal, 233-1, at Hiawatha Road about 1.5 mile west, to red. That signal also had a hot box light. This detector predated the radio alarm detectors common nowadays, and the axle temps would read out on a tape in the Hornell dispatchers office. The train would have to call the dispatcher, who would review the tape, and tell the crew which axles to check. I saw this about a month after this photo. I was chasing TV 201 here when the signal dropped to approach, and the hot box light went on. Interesting system. |

Big time |
Description: |
As noted, sometimes the U 23s would get a main line assignment, such as this XWB empty coal train going west from Johnson City, seen at MP 231 between Campville and Owego. |

ELOI rolls along the shelf on the cliff above the Chemung River. Atop the cliff is the well known sign for OBriens Inn, a long time Waverly landmark. Too bad you cant see the trains from the hotel. |

ELOI |
Description: |
There were two through freights on the Tier. OIBU and BUOI ran between Oak Island in Newark NJ and Frontier in Buffalo. The other pair was OIEL and ELOI, which ran between Oak Island and Elkhart, using the Meadville Line, the former EL Main Line, west of Hornell into Youngstown. OIEL ran most days east of Gang Mills, but ELOI was another story. There was not a lot of carload traffic(or much else for that matter) on the Meadville Line. The trains ran mostly at the insistence of NYSDOT, which had put up a pot full of money for track rehab, etc. The trains were often short-car counts in the teens-and would terminate in Gang Mills, with BUOI forwarding the cars. So it was an unusual thing to see ELOI in Elmira, and I caught it this day at Southport with a pair of EMDs. |

On the Tier |
Description: |
The XWB train has pulled off the Lehigh Line and is now fully on the Tier. The groundman has closed up the switches-its all hand throw-and will get a taxi up to the head end. Meanwhile, the train poses in front of Ted Clarks, a landmark for photos here for many years, and still in business as I write this. |

Early train |
Description: |
OIEL was usually an early morning job the days it ran, usually past Binghamton between 6 and 8 AM. I was up and out early, catching it rolling past the downtown buildings at Waverly. This train changed crews at Gang Mills, then took the Erie Main Line west at Hornell, serving Olean, Salamanca, and Jamestown. I really should have paid more attention to it on that segment; the problem was, you never knew if a new crew was getting on right away at Gang Mills. Sometimes the train would get there, and sit all day, killing the chase. I did get it a few times, just wish Id done it more. |
