Viewing Album:  Riding the Coast Starlight – Los Angeles to Seattle June 2021

Album Info:Foamin’ cross the USA! A dream-come-true retirement itinerary; Amtrak coast to coast and back. We took the Cardinal from Philadelphia to Chicago, then the Southwest Chief to LA. My favorite train was the Coast Starlight because of the nonstop and ever changing spectacular scenery. We got off the Coast Starlight in Klamath Falls and rented a car to go see Crater Lake National Park, then boarded the northbound Coast Starlight the next day to continue our transit to Seattle. Our return to Philadelphia was via the Empire Builder / Capitol Limited, and Pennsylvanian. I’ve decided to create several RRPictureArchive albums to share photos from each of the trains. This is the first, hopefully followed by several more. Riding Amtrak limits the photos one can get of the actual train itself. There are regular and announced 10 to 20 minute station stops where passengers are allowed a stretch-your-legs / smoking break on the platform. I used those stations to walk up and grab a photo of the front end; hopefully including the depot as a photo prop. While aboard I was taking photos from the Dome Lounge Car, and from the rear car of the train. Some of those photos are included in this album to give a sense of the passing scenery. There are regular polls in social media re: “What’s your favorite Amtrak Train?”, and the Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, and California Zephyr usually poll 1-2-3 among fans. After this trip, I’d vote for the Coast Starlight as my own personal favorite, with the Empire Builder a close second, but frankly all of the western routes are spectacular, and worth riding.
