Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Summer 2018
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
6/21/2018 - 9/21/2018
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 2604 and CN 2412
Description:
A CN unit train of empty centerbeam flatcars passes Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 as it crosses over from the former C&NW main line to the former SOO main line along Harrison St. at the south end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 22 Jun. '18. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. Nightfall was setting in and I was attempting to use the nose of the leading locomotive to highlight the molten metal which could be seen flowing inside the foundry. Unfortunately, I opened the shutter a little earlier than I wanted to, so the lead locomotive is too far to the right. Also, the molten metal is not quite as noticeable within this scene as I had hoped it would be. C’est la vie!

Description:
A CN local traverses what used to be the west leg of a wye and approaches 6th St. as it heads north via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Local was headed for LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.). LSC Communications was spun off from RR Donnelley ca. Nov. '16. WC 16 rests on a siding in the background. It was awesome to see a former MILW caboose on former MILW rails. The tank car and box car, background right, part of the local, rest on what was the south leg of the wye, former joint MILW/SOO rails. Sun Chemical Corp. is partially visible background left.

Description:
A CN local passes Dura-Fibre as it heads north via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point.

Description:
A CN local backs along what used to be the south leg of a wye along the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Local has just pulled off of what was the west leg of the wye, after picking up a couple of boxcars from LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.). They are preparing to pick up the remainder of their train, which they dropped on the south leg of the wye before heading for LSC Communications. The crude railing in the foreground marks the spot where a spur used to cross Tayco St. to serve what is now the Essity tissue mill. The mill dates to 1915 and was named Wisconsin Tissue Mills for the majority of its existence. It was a family-owned operation until 1977, when it became a corporate trading card. SCA bought it in 2001, they are the fourth corporation to control it in the last 41 years. They re-named their paper division Essity (a feeble combination of ‘essential’ and ‘necessity’) on 14 Jun. '17.

Description:
A CN local crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge at Menasha, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Train was returning to Neenah after working Menasha and points beyond. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Neenah was held 23 Jun. '18). I was thrilled that I was able to shoot a train during my first visit to the new bridge. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., Menasha, WI, can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The Coveris facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., Menasha, WI, is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge.

CN 8101, BNSF 4290
Description:
A CN through freight approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads northeast through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Jun. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility in the background at left is Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility. It, and the hard-working Americans employed there, are currently being used as pawns by K-C to extort corporate welfare from the taxpayers of Wis. ("We intend to close this facility, unless you give us money.") The facility partially visible at right is used by Neenah Foundry. The white building with sawtoothed roof on the left side of the yard is part of the Kimberly-Clark (K-C) Kimtech facility (historically Natural Fiber Textile Co.), which dates to at least 1920. The orange building partially visible at left might be part of the former Val-Fab, Inc. facility.

Train had two locomotives, CN 8101 and BNSF 4290. The tank cars at left are parked on the north leg of the wye. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible to the right of the locomotives. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties (near the center of the photograph) rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

CN 9530 and IC 3115
Description:
A CN local crosses S. Story St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Jun. '18. Train was headed back toward Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed recently (since 6 May) as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The interesting, old building at 302 S. Story St., partially visible beyond the locomotives, is currently home to The Train Station. Their facebook page describes it as a venue for “live music, open mic, educational presentations, film showings, yoga, classes, meetings.” The building dates to at least 1921, when it was a neighborhood grocery store owned by Otto J. Ruhsam. Circa the ‘50s it was the Heigl Grocery Beer Depot. The area to the right was home to the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view.

CN 9486
Description:
A CN local approaches the intersection of S. Lynndale Dr. and W. Everett St. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Appleton, WI on 28 Jun. '18. Train was headed back from Shawano. Even though the crossing signals and bell were activated and the train's horn was blaring, the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe was creeping forward to see if he could beat the train (he was supposed to stop well out-of-frame to the right when the RR crossing signals activated). He wisely determined that he probably could not and backed up to give the train some space.

Description:
A CN slows to halt under the nearly completed reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) as it parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 30 Jun. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, can be seen at left. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. (background) becomes N. Lake St. (foreground) underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:
A CN local crosses N. Oneida St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 1 Jul. '18. One of the C&NW's 3 Appleton depots stood to the right, on the south (right) side of the tracks between N. Appleton St. and N. Oneida St. The downtown depot closed ca. 1958 and passenger operations were concentrated at the Appleton Junction depot. There used to be at least 5 tracks here in front of the depot, now, only 1. The historic, tan building in the background was the S. C. Shannon Co., 531 N. Morrison St., 767-779 Morrison St. in original street numbering system. The facility is currently occupied by the Appleton Area School District and Aramark Food Service. Previous occupants include General Cheese Co., Inc., ca. '58. It used to receive rail service, but has not for quite some time. The short, black metal fence guards the boundary of Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries. Train was headed back toward Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna.

The nearly buried track closer to me is a spur occasionally used for MoW equipment.

Description:
An interesting quartet of foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers parallel to Hwy. 41 and approaching the Hwy. G overpass while headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Snells, WI on 12 Jul. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on other side of the train. The facility at left, with Veriha Trucking banners, has an indoor spur, but I don't know if it is currently used. I believe it is, or was, owned by RGL Logistics, 1715/1725 Dixie Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Town of Neenah). Previous occupants of the facility include Checker Logistics and Warehouse Specialists, Inc.

This was quite an unusual train, at least to me; the front half was loaded autoracks and back half was tank cars. I've never seen autoracks along here before. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. The facility partially visible in the background at right is home to SERVPRO of Appleton, 2235 Northern Rd., Appleton, WI. It has a spur but it does not appear to benefit from rail service. I don't think the occupant before them, Cag Pellets, received rail service either.
