NY 10 Panorama |
Description: |
I must have climbed up on one of the yard buildings or something to get this-try doing that nowadays!! This overhead view shows the NY 10 that had been waiting at QD behind a pair of ST units, now with the NYSW power on and ready to back out onto the Tier at QD for the trip east. It also shows the scenic beauty of the Southern Tier, which on a nice day can be really appealing. Its a truly beautiful place when its not raining. We're looking south from Bevier St(the actual street, not just the yard). The overpass is I 81/NY 17; the hills beyond are south of the Susquehanna River. In the right place, they afford a stunning view of downtown, or Vestal, depending on where you are. |

Waiting for the new crew |
Description: |
NY 10 is pulled up into Bevier St yard awaiting a new crew for the final leg to Jersey. Conrail will not let the D&H/NYSW stacks change crews on their main, so they have to pull into either the D&H yard at East Binghamton, or onto the Buffalo Runner and the Utica Branch. When the new crew is on, they will back the train out onto CR at QD, then head east. |

On the air |
Description: |
The north end of Bevier St was on the grade up to the tunnel, and NYSW would usually leave an engine on a train that was to be repowered if the rest of the power was going to the yard. This was to keep the air up in the train. Today NYSW 3638 has that task. We see it on an MEBU that will shortly get the rest of its power tied on and head west. The 3638 had a spotty service record, and was in and out of the shop, unlike 3636, which was pretty much constantly working. The lack of 3638s availability made it quite a challenge to get the two F 45s on the same train. I only saw it twice, and was unable to get a shot either time. |

NYSW tried whenever possible to run its own power in the lead. Sometimes that meant one of the F 45s, which was always a treat. Todays MEBU has 3636 leading at BX, about to cross CR at BD. The signal governed the long out of service crossing of the EL and D&H here on a diamond. Now it's a pair of crossovers. |

BUME arriving |
Description: |
Most of the time, BUAB would take the Buffalo Runner and head up to Bevier St and recrew, but sometimes if there was no room, or the power was to be changed, it would run into East Binghamton. Here we see it arriving behind NYSW 3638. This is something of a treat, as this unit was more of a hangar queen, and on the road only sporadically, thus seeing it in service was something of a novelty. |

Every day is like this |
Description: |
A wild assortment of power could be found at East Binghamton most days, and this day is like most. The two leased BAR units bracket a GATX lease unit. This trio will go out later as a helper set. The NYSW SD 45s were all over, as were a variety of other leased SD 45s, such as this ex Southern unit from NRL. |

Yard tower |
Description: |
Even the yard structures were built to last forever. This yard tower at East Binghamton was built with reinforced concrete, just like everything else the Lackawanna built in that era. An ex Reading GP 39 works in the yard. |

Ready to go back |
Description: |
CSX power often ran through on PYRP from Potomac Yard, and was turned at Binghamton. One such set is seen at East Binghamton. It will take RPPY south later this afternoon. Note the ex L&N unit. Didnt see many of these. Note the ex RDG unit switching in the background with some ex Reading box cars. |

Unusual find |
Description: |
CSX power was common on PYRP coming up from Potomac Yard, though most often it was various Chessie and ex SCL power. So it was a pleasant surprise to catch this ex L&N unit at East Binghamton. |

Classics |
Description: |
There are several features in this shot that are now classics. The "Susquehanna Division" sign, now long gone, recalls the EL, as does the signal, a reminder of the time when this was DLWs main track past the yard, not a running track as it is now. Of course, the RS 36 switching in the D&H lightning stripe scheme is one of the best paint jobs in America-on an Alco. |
