USAX 1401
Title:  USAX 1401
Description:  USAX 1401 has the following marked under the cab numbers: USMC 296619. This GP9 was constructed by EMD in August 1959 with a low nose as Southern Pacific 5873. SP later renumbered it to 3709, then sold it to the U.S. Army Transportation School as their 002. After that, it became Department of Transportation 1401 and then United States Marine Corps 296619. At one time, the lettering on the side said U.S. ARMY but the Army portion has since been painted out - most likely because this unit is assigned to USMCs Camp Pendleton, just north of Oceanside, California.

NJTR 4501
Title:  NJTR 4501
Description:  NJ Transit Bombardier-built ALP-45DP 4501 at Hoboken Terminal on the evening of December 29th, 2011. The ALP-45DP electro-diesel locomotive is derived from Bombardier's ALP-46 and uprated ALP-46A electric locomotives that have been used by NJ Transit since 2002. Its two Caterpillar 3512C-HD engines are arranged symmetrically around the transformer and traction converters to keep the weight balanced. As a result of the additional engine-generators, the ALP-45DP is approximately 6’7” longer and 88,000 lbs heavier than the ALP-46 and ALP-46A. Under the wires, the ALP-45DP has approximately 70% of the power of the ALP-46A (75% of the power of the ALP-46), although both its tractive effort and dynamic braking effort are similar. Away from the wires, it has much less power than in electric mode (55% to 72.5%), but has similar power and tractive effort characteristics to NJT's existing PL42AC diesel locomotives. New Jersey Transit has ordered 26 of these locomotives to bridge gaps between non-electrified lines (the Raritan Valley Line and the southern section of the North Jersey Coast Line) and electrified sections of track into New York Penn Station, which has an ordinance prohibiting locomotives from emitting diesel smoke within its tunnels. The first order is to be numbered 4500-4525. Unit 4501 arrived in the United States on March 13, 2011 at Port Newark, NJ, from where it was sent to the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado (over CSX by way of Selkirk Yard) for testing.

DBGX 6129
Title:  DBGX 6129
Description:  Benkelman, in the far southwestern corner of Nebraska, is home to a new grain elevator, which is switched by DeBruce Grain SD9 6129. This venerable EMD product rolled out of the La Grange IL plant as Colorado & Southern 837 in April 1959. The unit was renumbered Burlington Northern 6232 when C&Ss parent railroad, the Chicago Burlington & Quincy, was merged with the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Spokane Portland & Seattle. The BN would later merge with the Santa Fe, and this engine became, for a short time, Burlington Northern Santa Fe 6129.

Sunbury 1088
Title:  Sunbury 1088
Description:  The Sunbury Generation LP power plant at Shamokin Dam Pennsylvania, owns a switcher to handle the coal cars that arrive at the plant. The heritage of the engine, SW900R 1088, is apparent from the light package on the front - This engine rolled out of EMDs factory in suburban Chicago in June 1954 as Southern Pacific SW900 4627, wearing the attractive "zebra stripe" orange, silver and black paint scheme. In 1965 SP renumbered it to 1173, and rebuilt it to an SW900R in October 1974, which also warranted a new number: SP 1194. The mighty SP retired this engine in December 1986, and ten months later sold it to Levin Metals in Richmond, CA. Levin in turn sold it to National Railway Equipment Corporation, who sold it in 1990 to Pennsylvania Power & Light Company, who numbered it 1088. Along with new paint, of course, other modifications to this engine by its new owners include the addition of a snowplow on each end, spark arrestors and a rebuilt cab roof in order to clear the power plants equipment - But the old SP light package and hood-mounted numberboards remain! (Photo taken on private property with permission and wearing full PPE.)

GMTX 2623
Title:  GMTX 2623
Description:  Wandering the grounds of Metro East Industries, Incorporated, in Alorton, Illinois, is like browsing in a well-stocked hobby shop - Following every turn one discovers locomotives painted for yet another railroad or leasing company! At the southern end of a typically eclectic string of diesels is GMTX GP38-2 2623. This EMD product started out as Penn Central GP38 7932, later becoming part of the Conrail roster (as CR 7932) upon that railroads formation in 1976. When CRs assets were divided among Norfolk Southern and CSX, this GP38 became CSXT 1994. (Other power visible includes locomotives from former NJ Transit [now MVPX], Helm Leasing and CEFX.) [Taken on private property with permission and full PPE.]

Description:  On February 26, 2006, I photographed Soo Line GP40 2064 in Canadian Pacifics engine facility in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Eight years, seven months and six days later I photographed it again, this time in Granite City, Illinois. Built in December 1968 and now owned by Respondek Railroad Corporation, but not yet wearing the RRC reporting mark, this engine still retains the colors of original owner Milwaukee Road.

EMDX 7101
Title:  EMDX 7101
Description:  The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach tend to have a higher than average amount of air-borne particulates, due to all the ship, truck and rail traffic required to get thousands of containers per day on their way across America. As a result, little Pacific Harbor Line, which switches the port area, is always on the lookout for new, low-emission locomotives. Testing on the PHL on July 15, 2016, is EMDX GP22ECO 7101, caught bringing a short train to an industrial section of Long Beach, California. Originally Penn Central GP40 3173 (built by EMD in October 1968), this engine became Conrail 3173 when that railroad was formed in 1976. CR sold it so KCS, as their 750, later renumbered to KCS 4750. It was later rebuilt as a "GP40-3" for Kansas City Southern, for which it wore number 4789 and, later, 2836.
