| Description: |
You never know what you will find these days lurking around Waterville Yard. In the past two years the shops have remained a vital part of what is now the New England Division of CSX, providing space to store lines of out of service CSX and MEC EMDs as well as get older CSX locomotives previously stored elsewhere on their system reactivated and up and running. As the afternoon sun shines over the west end of the yard things are quiet as CSXT 8873 - MEC 7545; just in from Hermon on L071 sits with the L061 yard power; MEC 305 - MEC 315. About a half hour later an enginehouse crew would take these units to the service area and pull four MEC lettered locomotives up to this spot for the night's L070 power for Portland. |

A New Look on the MEC |

Since a brief period early last year when M426/M427 were extended to Waterville Yard with CSX road power being used the whole trip, CSX power east of Rigby had become rare again with just a few local service units and dead-in-tow EMDs going to and from the Waterville shops. Lately in the past few weeks more CSX units have been popping up on the various locals mostly east of Rigby, including these two recent Huntington SD40-2 rebuilds; now powered with a GE prime mover. The new locomotive model is known as SD23T4. Personally I find fresh company paint like this refreshing after seven years of patched up former CSX C40-8s (often referred to as "blobs" by photographers). Of the very few trains I've ever photographed rolling along the waterfront in downtown Bangor this was my first time getting a westbound. L072-20 returns west to Hermon about sixteen hours late with the L060 (NM-1) crew aboard; with CSXT 9280 - CSXT 8873 in charge of about the typical forty cars from Mattawamkeag. They will stop at Northern Maine Junction for a brief crew swap with the eastbound which had been waiting patiently for a few hours with MEC lettered blobs for power. Unfortunately the sun had just about set by the time this train continued west toward Carmel as L071-21, but it was worth it to check a few new spots off of my list. |
