Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2014, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too. A handful of photos are from Illinois and Iowa too.

GBW 21 Combination RPO/Baggage, ex GBW 52 Coach
Title:  GBW 21 Combination RPO/Baggage, ex GBW 52 Coach
Description:  GBW X21 'Winona' on display at National Railroad Museum at Ashwaubenon, WI on 21 Jul. '14. According to http://greenbayroute.com/, it was originally GBW 52, a 60'-0" coach built by Hicks Locomotive and Car Works in 1908. Rebuilt as GBW 21, an RPO/baggage car in 1929-30. Renumbered GBW X21 and renamed ‘Winona’ in Feb. 1945; it was the "rumpus car" in the GB&W's Miller's Specials in the 1950s and 1960s. It was donated to National Railroad Museum in Jul. 1963. Sister GBW 20 was on display at Rapid River, MI for some time, but was moved to the Marion Area Historical Society at Marion, WI on 2 Jul. ‘13. GB&W donated sister GBW 22, ex-GBW 51, to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1970 for display at Stonefield Village in Cassville, WI. I'm not sure if it is still there, it is not mentioned with the other RR equipment on their website.

Description:  CN through freight crosses Arndt St. and parallels S. Broadway and the Fox River as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Green Bay, WI on 21 Jul. '14. It is also crossing the turnout for the north leg of the wye that leads to the remnants of former GB&W Norwood Yard. It has just pulled out of the former C&NW/GB&W yards at North Green Bay. I don't know its ultimate destination, but it had loaded TTPX wood chip cars which will end up in Neenah eventually.

GTW 5944
Title:  GTW 5944
Description:  CN local approaches N. Oneida St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails near downtown Appleton, WI on 22 Jul. '14. Train had just finished working Little Chute and Kaukauna was heading back to Neenah, it will make a brief stop at Appleton Junction enroute. There used to be a lot of rail activity along this stretch, the buildings on both sides of the track used to receive rail service for example, but that was probably more than 25 years ago.

Description:  Looking west along CN, former GB&W, rails from Ferry St. at Northport, WI on 23 Jul. '14. Rail Activity in Manawa Again, Sort of.
Title:  Rail Activity in Manawa Again, Sort of.
Description:  CN 074930 and GBW 1001 at Depot St. in Manawa, WI on 23 Jul. '13. The MoW worker was working in the signal relay case, the door is open. Is it just routine maintenance, or could it indicate rail traffic returning to this line in the near future? I haven’t been able to pinpoint the location of the 1898 wood-frame depot, but I think it stood about where GBW 1001 is now. Some photographs of that depot can be found at: http://www.greenbayroute.com/manawa.htm.

GB&W Remnants at Manawa.
Title:  GB&W Remnants at Manawa.
Description:  Looking southeast along CN, former GB&W, rails at Depot St. in Manawa, WI on 23 Jul. '13. I believe the ca. ‘51 cinderblock GB&W Manawa depot was located to the right of the station sign. Some foundation remnants are visible and part of a fence, similar to the one that enclosed the base of the radio tower, is hidden in the overgrowth. A photo can be found at: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/.

CN 9452
Title:  CN 9452
Description:  CN local halted on former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 24 Jul. '14. They were headed for Appleton Junction, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and will soon take the track to the left which connects to the former C&NW main line. The track on the right heads to Shawano via SOO rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and this turnout was installed.

CN 5641
Title:  CN 5641
Description:  The trail unit of a CN Stevens Point to Green Bay train idles on former C&NW rails on the siding at Stroebe, WI on 27 Jul. '14. Train had two locomotives, CN 5798 pulling and CN 5641 pushing. The 40-car train halted at the northeast end of Stroebe siding, to wait for a local which was dropping a string of cars at Appleton Junction. For some reason the trail unit uncoupled from the train and ran back to the southwest end of the siding, seemed a little unusual. The western approach to the Roland Kampo Bridge over Little Lake Butte des Morts is in the background.

ILSX 1338 and ELS 500
Title:  ILSX 1338 and ELS 500
Description:  E&LS train passes the team track as it approaches Main St. while hauling 27 cars northward via former MILW rails at Abrams, WI on 31 Jul. '14. It is cool to see a former MILW unit, ELS 500, running on former MILW rails; obviously it would be much cooler if was wearing its original paint scheme. The pulpwood cars could easily be loaded where they sit. Are the covered hoppers loaded or unloaded by Abrams Feed & Grain (out of frame to the right) somehow, or are they spotted here for some other reason? On old maps it appears the depot stood to the right, west, of the cars on the team track, but there is clearly enough room for the depot to have stood between the tracks, with the team track running behind it.

GTW 5856 and IC 9617

Description:  A CN local approaches the former C&NW swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 (out of frame to right) as it hauls 37 cars westward through 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 4 Aug. '14. Train had just descended the grade from Telulah Park on its way back to the yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW fixed bridge over the Fox River. The active line was originally laid by the MLS&W. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

The small white, building (background right) is a replica of the Vulcan Street Plant, the country's first Edison hydroelectric central station designed to serve both residential and commercial customers. It began operation 25 Nov. 1882 and this replica stands at the approximate location of the original. This generator was identical to its more famous twin, which began generating electricity 3/4-mile upstream on 30 Sep. ’82 (that one serving just commercial customers).
