A CN local crosses a frozen Mud Creek via the former C&NW deck plate girder bridge as it heads northeast at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 9 Dec. '18. The C&NW bridge was built by Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co., North Milwaukee, WI, in 1923. Some of the bents of the former SOO timber trestle bridge, also in use by CN, can be seen under this bridge. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. |

A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and Hwy. 41 as it heads northeast with about 16 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 13 Jan. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16). The former SOO rails run parallel to the right (partially visible beyond the tall, dormant vegetation). Hwy. 41 was not visible from here, until a substantial growth of trees and brush between the two rails lines was removed in the summer or fall of 2018. The Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. Polish Connection) is partially visible in the background. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. |

Description: |
A CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it prepares to transition from the former C&NW rails to the former SOO rails (in the foreground) at Shawano Junction, WI on 12 May '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. |

Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. Description: |
A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The local, preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, is approaching the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. In the background, GTW 6226 prepares to transition from the east leg of the wye to the north leg of the wye. The white building partially visible between the locomotives is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood to the left, at what is now Arrowhead Park, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (out of frame to left), and an Ascension clinic (formerly Affinity clinic) at 101 Main St. occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah. |

A CN local pauses at Milepost CM 186 under the Winneconne Ave. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 22 Jun. '19. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in ‘22. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in ‘60 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in ‘67). Plant 1 was closed in ‘94, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 7 Jul. '19. After finishing here, local headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible at left. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, can be seen beyond the locomotive. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. |

In the foreground, the former C&NW freight house stands at right. Measuring 20 x 60, it was completed in Sep. 1958 along what was originally the MLS&W main line (which ran parallel to the southwest side of the building). It seems rather small for a freight house, but I presume it was designed to supplement, not replace, the much larger freight house near downtown Appleton. The northeast leg of the wye runs along this side of the building. |

IC 3138 |
Description: |
A CN local parallels the Fox River and approaches the S. Memorial Dr. bridge as it descends the grade from the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, down into 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 6 Nov. '19. A fresh, early season snowfall blankets the scene. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks with about 12 cars. Some of the neat, old houses on W. Front St. can be seen atop the bluff in the background. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’ |
